This is super cool! A couple of elementary school students in Massachusetts took a creative approach to making a pedestrian crossing more safe. Isa, who is in grade 3, and fourth-grader Eric designed and pitched an optical-illusion crosswalk that kind of looks like a speed bump, and catches the attention of drivers who may speed through otherwise.
The duo came up with the idea for the 3D crosswalk after Eric’s brother had a close-call with a car near the school, and worked with the local Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility to make it happen. When you’re walking across it, you can tell it’s painted, but when you’re driving it looks three dimensional. Similar premises have been used in countries including England, India and China.
The kids did such a good job, the city is planning to do something similar at some other elementary school crosswalks. I would love to see something like this implemented in certain spots around T-Bay!
