Councillor Wary Of Tax Hikes

One City Councillor predicts you will pay more for property taxes next year.

Rebecca Johnson wasn’t keen on Monday night’s suggestions to put more of the tax burden on residents, but feels it will be difficult to avoid.

Council asked staff to come back in May with alternatives to the tax strategy that was brought forward on Monday.

“It doesn’t matter how we work it, what option we take. The bottom line is there is going to be a tax increase to every resident and every business in our community.”

She claims that your bill will go up, whether through a higher tax levy increase or if you are reassessed.

“And how do we try to address those issues? Because I don’t believe that the residential can absorb any more taxes.”

Johnson says the city will have to make some tough decisions like considering cutting services.
