MPP Calls For First Nations Consultations

The MPP for Kiiwetinoong says the Ford Conservatives must stop undermining the government’s duty to consult with First Nations on the Far North Act.

Sol Mamakwa says more consultations and proper engagement are needed in order to improve and replace the act.

The NDP Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation critic claims if hearings are rushed and communities are forced to travel to give evidence that means many community voices will be missed.

Mamakwa stresses the Far North is not open for business without First Nations’ involvement in the development of their territories.

Mamakwa notes First Nations aren’t red tape.

He say the province must respect their treaty rights through meaningful consultation, noting they want to benefit from the resources on their territory.
