National Pet Day

It’s National Pet Day! A fantastic excuse to celebrate our dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, hamsters, frogs, ferrets and hogs! We have an eleven-year-old pooch named Hogan. He’s half-yorkie, half-cockapoo. I’ll give him an extra treat today, and throw his toys a few times more than usual. I’d like to say I’ll take him for a long walk, but Environment Canada says strong winds and snow are coming, so that will have to wait. Hogan’s maintained a svelte 7.5 pound body weight over the course of his adult life and I’d hate to see him blow away in the wind (especially on National Pet Day!)

While celebrating our pets is part of it, National Pet Day encourages us to pay special attention to animals who don’t get that type of attention daily. Pet Day USA has a great list of suggestions. These are just some of them. You can find more on their website by clicking here.

1. Adopt a pet from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization.

2. Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.

3. Donate blankets, food and toys to a favorite animal welfare organization.

4. Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food, hay or needed items for their pets.

5. Post photos of your pets on social media using the hashtag #NationalPetDay

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
