Bizarre Morning Near Dorion

If you were one of the many people who got stuck behind a long line of traffic this morning on Highway 11-17 near Dorion here’s the reason.

Police say it started just after midnight with a driver of a pick-up truck who was travelling in the wrong lane of the four lane divided highway .

Police tried to catch up with him but the driver kept going in the wrong lane.

The driver eventually drove his vehicle into the ditch but became stuck .

Police say threats were were then made to a 9-1-1 operator and the highway was shut down in both directions until the situation was resolved.

A 34 year old Thunder Bay man is charged.

As for the vehicle, it caught fire during negotiations with police and was destroyed.

Charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and arson is Dustin Allan Smith.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
