A new report on homelessness in our district shows 474 people were without a place to call their own during a 24 hour period on April 21st and 22nd.
The Point-In-Time Count shows 50.6 percent couch surfed, 26.6 percent stayed at an emergency shelter, and 10 percent used transitional shelter like a motel or hotel.
Other stats in the report include 7.2 percent of people reporting they stayed in a tent and 0.6 percent using the public system like the hospital.
Of those surveyed 63 percent are men, and 35 percent are women.
Most of the people surveyed were between the age of 25-34 and 35-44.
66 percent of those involved in the report identify as Indigenous.
Six recommendations to end homelessness came out of this report, and they include expanding culturally supportive housing for Indigenous people, addressing service gaps in child welfare systems and supporting addictions treatment centres.
The District Social Services Board released the findings Tuesday morning.
