A political science expert feels the Prime Minister was between a rock and a hard place during trade negotiations.
Lakehead University’s Laure Paquette tells us Justin Trudeau had to make the decision to either hurt the dairy farmers or hurt our economy long term.
“There had to be a trade-off between access to the dairy market, which was almost a non-issue, if you looked at the facts, except that Mr. Trump fixated on it.”
The professor feels if the Canadian government didn’t concede on the dairy front, the car industry would have felt the United States wrath.
However, she has some reassurance for worried dairy farmers.
Paquette tells us the deal still needs to be ratified by each country.
“You can sleep soundly at night, because it has to go through [the United States] Congress,” Paquette argues. “And it’s not going to get through before the [November midterm elections], and if the Democrats get through, the Democrats are going to be looking very closely at these sorts of issues.”
