“I have cancer, my breast has to come off, I’m going in for the mastectomy tomorrow”.
Those might not be the exact words my mother said, but that’s how I hear her voice when I remember that day now. My mother wasn’t one for mincing words, or for even giving anyone details until they absolutely had to know. We all know someone who has be affected by cancer and we all have stories about how we’ve been affected as a result. Research is expensive, and ongoing, which is why researchers are always asking for donations. It’s why we have ‘funds’ and ‘campaigns’. More than money though, support for those affected is incredibly important. For the person who was just told they needed to have chemotherapy, to have a mastectomy, or even just found a lump, seeing pink ribbons, pink irons or pink valve caps on tires when they pull up to a stop light on the expressway…that show of support is important. It shows them they are not alone, even if it’s a fleeting moment. Sometimes that moment is all they need to make things seem a little less lonely, a little less hopeless.
I’ll be at Downtown Volkswagen today from 4-6pm putting pink valve caps on tires, for my mom, for my aunt, and in hope that my kids don’t have to deal with what we all have.
