Video Hits

Some of the tunes we’ve been playing on 99.9 The Bay have got us talking about one of our old favourite shows. “Video Hits”! According to Wikipedia, the show ran from 1984 – 1993 on CBC. In the early years, I had a bit of an internal battle when it came to “Video Hits”. The problem being that it aired at the same time as “Scooby Doo”. Now, I loved “Video Hits” host Samantha Taylor but, at that point in time, I loved Scoob and the gang even more. It was a daily battle between my sister and I. She wanted to watch the latest videos of the day, I wanted to watch Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Velma foil the plans of a variety of spooky bad guys. I’d like to say we fought over the remote but that would be a lie. There were no remotes yet. We fought over the dial. She wanted Channel 5, I was a Channel 13 guy. Eventually, the problem was solved for us. Scooby no longer aired on WDIV. I could watch “Video Hits” without worrying about if the Mystery Machine would hold up for another adventure.

I LOVED host Samantha Taylor. She was probably one of my first crushes (along with Chrissy from “Three’s Company”.) She was so cool and interviewed such awesome musicians. The show helped put faces to the people I was listening to on the radio and on our records and tapes. I will never forget the first time I saw the video for Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round”. The singer gave my sister and I a serious case of the creeps. But we loved it. “Video Hits” was also one of the first “cool” shows I can remember. One that everybody at school was always talking about, and you kind of felt left out if you weren’t in the know. Like, for instance, if, instead of talking about Corey Hart, you were talking about how delicious Scooby-Snacks must be.

This is one of the things I’m really loving about The Bay. It’s bringing up so many memories of things I haven’t thought about in years. “Video Hits” being one of them. Today I searched “Video Hits Sam Taylor” and found this old intro. What a blast from the past. Hope it brings you right back, like it did for me.
