Firefighters Battle 19 New Forest Fires

19 new fires broke out in the region yesterday, bringing the total to 57 active fires.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says two were extinguished by the end of the day, 11 are not under control, and six are being held, under control or being observed.

The largest new fire is in the Dryden District, 64 kilometres southwest of Armstrong, and is not under control at the size of two baseball fields.

The forest fire hazard is moderate to high across the Northwest.
