City Stays Silent On Border Cats Deal

There’s a cone of silence around City Hall when it comes to the compensation deal between the City and the Thunder Bay Border Cats.

City Manager Norm Gale won’t comment to us about that agreement referring instead to the original contract from May of 2016 that deals with the use of the Port Arthur Stadium which he claims has a confidentiality clause in it.

Details became public after a successful application through the Freedom of Information Act but Gale notes they are still bound by the confidentiality agreement and won’t comment.

The Border Cats were without a home for the first two weeks of the 2017 season while repairs were made to Port Arthur Stadium ahead of the World Baseball Cup. The City told us in August of that year that they had reached a deal but again wouldn’t comment on specifics. You can read that story HERE.

In an email to our newsroom, Mayor Keith Hobbs stated that the U-18 World Baseball Cup brought in millions to the local economy and put Thunder Bay on the world scene. He said that you can’t put a price on that.

The Mayor added that the Border Cats have put them on the international scene and have helped the local economy. (File photo)
