Don’t rule out a proposed one-minute limit for idling your car.
City Councillors are asking City Administration for more information on how they might introduce the bylaw Dr. Nicola Wilberforce is calling for.
Speaking to Council Monday night, she argues that idling for too long damages your car, and doesn’t have any benefits above freezing temperatures.
“It takes less than 30 seconds to get oil circulating through the engine,” Wilberforce explains.
Wilberforce told Council that the ban wouldn’t apply in below-zero or above 30-degree weather, or to emergency vehicles.
Other possible exemptions would include vehicles taking part in a parade, or carrying perishable goods.
She admits the bylaw would be difficult to enforce, but hopes that an awareness campaign to go along with the ban would discourage drivers from running their engines for long periods of time. (File Photo)
