Ontario Provincial Police say new rules will enable all-terrain vehicles access to the 500 series of roads and higher.
This will enable an ATV driver who is travelling on a trail to use a road to travel to the next portion of trail, regardless to time spent on the road.
MTO Regional Planner Tom Marinis also says motorists will need to be more aware now.
He adds ATV drivers have not been allowed on highways before, and will now need to be registered and insured as any other motor vehicle.
