Unless the city decides to build a stand alone convention facility, we can kiss our event centre good-bye.
Federal minister Greg Rickford, helping to put the final nail in the coffin, says the city has always known the centre was never on the government’s funding radar with an arena included.
He says the contents of last weeks letter from the government should have been no surprise to anyone at City Hall.
He says funding in one of the previous phases from the federal government was confined to the convention centre.
Rickford says it was the city’s prerogative to proceed how it wished in the design of the event complex.
When asked about Mayor Hobb’s comments that the fed’s decision was a “dumb idea” the minister noted the file was “very important” to the mayor. (File photo)
