Residents Speak Out Against Racism

The city isn’t taking racism lying down.

TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin was in the city on Saturday to lead a discussion on race relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents in Thunder Bay.

About 200 people were at the event, and participants – of all backgrounds – agreed Thunder Bay’s First Nations community is still fighting discrimination.

Participants say the issue stems from a lack of education on Aboriginal history in the schools, while others say the political landscape at all levels of government need to change first.

Many were surprised to hear Aboriginal residents speak of their negative experiences using status cards at local businesses. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
