Student Union Calls For Education Standard

The President of Lakehead University’s Student Union says there needs to be a federal framework for how the provinces provide post-secondary education.

The comments come following news last week that tuition fees in Ontario support over half of all university operating costs.

Ian Kaufman says it’s a sympton of the fact that every province has wildly different policies on how they administer and deliver university degrees, adding Ontario not only has the highest tuition fees in the country, but also the lowest per-student funding.

Kaufman asks why it is that with health care, the provinces must provide standard care, but no regulations are in place with post-secondary education. He says it’s an important issue to raise, coming into a federal election.
