Cyclotron Lands In TBay

A new piece of equipment is being welcomed by medical experts across the region, today.

The northwest’s first and only cyclotron was installed this afternoon, at Thunder Bay’s Health Services Centre. Mike Campbell with the Regional Research Institute says they should be able to get the cyclotron powered up within a month or two, though it’ll take longer than that to produce isotopes for patients.

The new piece of equipment addresses an isotope shortage across Canada, which means cancer patients in the northwest will no longer be subject to delays in treatment.

Campbell says the cyclotron has a price tag of $3.5 million, though the total value of the project is in the ballpark of $8 million. (Photo and video: Caryn Ceolin)
