Tbaytel says it’s just following the law.
Spokesperson Katie Crowe says they’re being forced to send notification emails to its Internet customers whose IP addresses have been singled out by copyright holders for illegal downloading. She says it’s part of a new Canadian law requiring such notices to be sent out if requested.
Crowe says however, the city owned utility is not giving out any names. She says it’s definitely not something where they’re identifying a customer for their own purposes or for the purposes of the copyright owner.
Crowe says they have enough notifications to send out a few hundred emails a week.
