Thunder Bay District Health Unit and Pioneer Ridge on Tungsten Street have declared an outbreak of Rhinovirus.
This is a respiratory illness, and the outbreak is considered to be on Plaza One only. All admissions, transfers, discharges, and social activities have been cancelled on Plaza One until further notice. Visitors are currently restricted to family members and caregivers only, and you are asked to call the facility if you have any questions.
Rhinovirus infections cause the common cold, and can lead to sore throats, ear infections, and sinus infections. While it is less common, it can also cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
The Health Unit reminds the public that they can prevent getting and spreading infections by:
Getting a seasonal flu shot and COVID vaccine from your health care provider or
pharmacist.
Washing hands often, for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water, or by using an
alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Covering coughs/sneezes with the upper sleeve if no tissue is available.
Putting all used tissues in the garbage right away and rewashing your hands.
Staying at home if sick to avoid spreading infections to others
The health unit is asking anyone feeling sick to avoid hospitals or long-term care homes.
