Fiddler Vying For AFN Grand Chief Post

Alvin Fiddler is one of the candidates in the running for National Chief of The Assembly of First Nations.

The Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation made his intentions to run known back in May, noting that drastic changes were needed to strengthen communities.

Following several terms as Deputy Grand Chief, Fiddler was elected Grand Chief of NAN in 2015.

Outgoing National Chief Perry Bellegarde made it known in December of 2020 that he would not seek re-election.

Several First Nations organizations and individuals have sent letters to leadership, requesting a delay to the vote with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The AFN Chief represents the advocacy organization’s 634 First Nations, encompassing more than 900,000 people.

The winner is expected to be announced Wednesday.
