UPDATE: Teen Dies After James St. Incident; Standoff Over

Updated 7:20 PM June 29, 2021

It’s been a busy Tuesday for Thunder Bay police with significant events in opposite ends of town.

It started with a standoff as police received the call around 7:00 a.m. about a man who may have had a gun.

They ended up outside a house on Conmee Street near Gertude Avenue, using loudspeakers and other methods to try to convince the man to hand himself over to police.

Around 2:30 p.m. police opened the area to the public again but said they were still guarding the scene and didn’t announce any arrests.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old has been arrested after what police called a serious incident in the James Street bridge area.

They were called there early Tuesday morning. We now know that a 16-year-old boy has died after that incident, and a 17-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say both were hurt in a fight with an adult man, but the younger boy died of his injuries after arriving at the hospital.

Officers identified and arrested the man on outstanding, but unrelated, warrants. They later learned he was also the suspect involved in the earlier disturbance.

He’s facing aggravated assault and second-degree murder charges.
