A new apartment building and shopping centre will be built on Golf Links Road, across from Riviera Drive.
City planner Jillian Fazio tells us it’s needed for those living nearby, an area designated as neighbourhood commercial in Thunder Bay’s official plan.
“One of the goals of the Official Plan is to provide neighbourhood commercial uses for different neighbourhoods spread throughout the city. So, right now, the River Terrace subdivision doesn’t have any commercial uses in walking distance,” says Fazio.
City council approved this plan in 2019.
She adds the types of stores coming in the mall are not quite clear yet. “I believe there are no retail stores permitted here. But a food store would be a permitted type. If the zoning amendment is approved, office space, as well as personal services, so hair salons.”
The city planner adds the current building permit does not allow a hotel, the developer would have to apply to do that.
