NDP MPP Calls For Action On Grassy Narrows

A northern Ontario MPP is upset with what he calls a lack of progress on the mercury contamination in Grassy Narrows First Nation.

Guy Bourgouin of the NDP says the government’s stance on staying open for business shouldn’t come at the expense of the health of people in the community.

“There are 4,000 mining claims in the territory of Grassy Narrows First Nation. Meanwhile, two sites of potential mercury contamination poisoning the rivers, the wildlife and the people of Grassy Narrows have yet to be acted on,” he says.

Bourgouin says another investigation has looked at contaminated soil that was found behind the Dryden Mill, and the government has failed to act on clearing out the soil.
