As the district’s COVID-19 case counts go down our chances of looser restrictions grows.
The medical officer of health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Dr. Janet DeMille, believes by the time the province’s stay-at-home order is over, we should have improved considerably.
“Right now we’re sort of in the Orange or Red region (of the provincial framework) but you know if we keep at this sort of level then that’s what we’ll be looking at, at the end of that order,” explains DeMille.
The health official says at the moment the district’s seven-day average for cases sits at around 40.
However, Dr. DeMille still believes the variant strains of the coronavirus continue to pose a threat to our district and we should be on the alert for them.
DeMille Disappointed By Schooling Order
Earlier in the week, the Ford government ordered Ontario schools to online learning after the April break.
It happened just days after Dr. DeMille gave permission to the local school boards to reopen schools for students, teachers, and staff.
She believes it would have been safe for students to go back to in-class learning in this region.
“You know I was admittedly disappointed that they did apply (the order) in this area…our numbers are low enough and our situation would permit our schools to be open for in-person learning,” noted DeMille.
