Paramedics Could Strike This Weekend

Paramedics who work with Superior North EMS could move to strike action this weekend.

Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action last month and according to Unifor spokesperson Rob Moquin services would look a little different if that action is taken.

“We will not be running the COVID-19 testing or vaccine centre,” Moquin remarked. “We will not be running the community paramedic program, however we will provide just essential ambulance service to the city of Thunder Bay,” Moquin said.

The union and city have a bargaining session scheduled for Friday. Should an agreement not be reached members could walk off the job as of Sunday at 12:01 a.m.

The city maintains in the event of a walkout essential services by paramedics will be maintained.

“We don’t bargain in the media,” said City Manager Norm Gale, “We greatly appreciate the skill, diligence, and hard work of the City’s paramedics at all times but especially during this unprecedented time.”
