Wire Theft Leads To Alstom Layoffs

Some temporary layoffs are underway at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay.

Union spokesperson Dominic Pasqualino tells us some necessary wiring has not arrived because it was stolen in Mexico where it originates from.

The wiring is used in helping to construct the bi-level cars at the plant.

As a result, Pasqualino explains, “There will be delays on that.”

The two-week rotating layoffs will affect about 50 workers to start and then 20 or so employees after that but that no layoffs will last more than two weeks.

The union official is hoping the wires will show up soon to prevent additional short term job losses.
