Local Family Adapting To Virtual Learning

It’s taking some adjusting as a Thunder Bay mom and her two sons with the latest virtual learning.

Joanna Sutton tells us while she feels this is the safest approach against COVID-19, her sons appear indifferent with this second time round, starting with her oldest, 11-year old Kallem.

“He’s pretty independent, and managing his learning throughout the day with the class and his teacher. For my youngest, he needs a little bit more help in terms of gathering materials, or just getting organized,” says Sutton.

The local mother adds her sons miss out not seeing their friends, but they are also becoming better at adapting to life’s curve balls.

Virtual learning also means balancing the positives and negatives. While she has to now bring more of their school life into the home, along with her work and home life, she is closer to what they are learning.

“I can kind of hear what’s happening, as I’ve got one set up downstairs and the other one is set up in the kitchen across from me, so I can hear what’s happening. Normally they will let me know,” says Sutton.

She also feels this is the safest way to proceed against COVID-19, and credits teachers for their efforts.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
