Union Hoping For Pandemic Solution Soon

There is hope at Thunder Bay’s District Jail some kind of action will take place soon over the COVID-19 outbreak.

Union leader Bill Hayes points out with 20 infected inmates, and five staff as well, he’s continually on the phone with the provincial government, and other correctional facilities around Ontario. “As far as I know communication is on-going right now, and hopefully they come up with a game plan, today or tomorrow. We’d like to see this getting resolved by the end of the week, at least our count pressures.”

Officials at the Correctional Centre add they are dealing with two infections, affecting where the jail sends inmates.

Hayes adds the discussion also revolves around whether to send inmates from the jail to the correctional centre, or elsewhere.

“That’s what the government’s going to have to make arrangements for. Usually in a situation like that, where they’re in a dorm setting, we’d be able to isolate them here, and help them out. The Northwest is really struggling,” says Hayes.
