Hydro One Warns Of Holiday Scams

With telephone and Internet scams on the rise, Hydro One is alerting you to be careful.

Spokesperson Alex Stewart explains some common tactics include impersonating someone from a local utility.

“That can mean sending threatening phone calls, texts, or emails or showing up in person at your home or business asking for personal information,” says Stewart.

The Hydro One spokesperson advises the utility will not immediately disconnect any customers for not paying their bill.

Stewart is encouraging you to protect yourself by following these tips to stay safe:

  • Never make a payment for a charge that isn’t listed on your most recent bill
  • Ignore text messages or emails with suspicious links promising refunds
  • Don’t call the number provided to you. Instead, call your utility directly to check the status of your account
  • Do not provide any personal information or details about your account
  • Utility companies will never threaten immediate disconnection for non-payment
  • If you feel threatened in any way, contact your local police
  • Always be suspicious if someone asks for payment with gift cards or bitcoin.
