Expect To Hear Alert System Test Today

A test of the emergency public alert system will be done today, across the country.

Depending on where people live, there will be an interruption on the radio, television and mobile device. For the Thunder Bay area, that’ll happen at 12:55 this afternoon.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says testing the national public alerting system is to validate and improve the system’s performance and reliability to ensure it operates as intended in the event of a life-threatening situation.

When you get the alert you are not required to take action, but if you don’t get it on your mobile device you are asked to contact your service provider.

For a wireless device to receive a test alert, the CRTC says it must be connected to an LTE wireless or a newer wireless network, it must be wireless public alerting compatible and equipped with a recent Canadian version of its operating software.
