Blue-Green Algae Found In Surprise Lake

A warning from Thunder Bay’s health unit to avoid Surprise Lake in Gorham Township.

It, along with the Ministry of Environment, says blue-green algae was found in a sample taken September 16th.

The government is checking to see if it’s toxic, however, it is advised you avoid the lake for two weeks after any algae has disappeared, as toxins can still be produced based on environmental conditions.

The health unit adds the algae, naturally in the water, forms a bloom with more sun, and can make water look like green pea soup, or turquiose paint, usually in warm, shallow water.

To get rid of the toxin if it ends up on your skin, use soap and water.
