City Transit Receives $25.5 Million

Thunder Bay Transit is getting a huge injection of cash from all three levels of government.

Mayor Bill Mauro explains the total amounts to $25.5 million for 13 transit projects.

The Government of Canada is investing over $10.4 million in these projects, the Government of Ontario is contributing more than $8.5 million, while the City of Thunder Bay is contributing over $6.6 million.

According to Mauro “Not since Thunder Bay Transit became the first transit agency in Ontario to be 100% accessible back in 2007 has there been a multi-year investment in our service as consequential as this.”

The projects include:

The upgrading of four transit hubs and the construction of a new one, with widened sidewalks, automatic doors, and heated shelters.

The purchase of four conventional buses, and 14 new specialized paratransit buses.

As well, 40 new bus shelters and several hundred new mobility pads for accessibility.

A new electronic fare management system to make payment simpler through reloadable smart cards.

The joint announcement was made Thursday afternoon at the city transit headquarters on Water Street.
