Protection For School Bus Drivers Needed: Union

A list of demands to keep school bus drivers safe has been sent to the Ontario government.

It’s from the union Unifor, which says many bus drivers are feeling uneasy about next month, and feel there’s a lack of information of what to do.

The union wants the government to make sure there is enough personal protective equipment on buses, such as masks, shields, gloves and gowns, and that all students be mandated to wear masks at all times. Also, each bus is to be sanitized by a professional cleaner after each run, and not the driver.

The union wants students to be spaced out more, adding 74 students cannot be allowed on one bus. It also wants more drivers hired, and paid adult monitors to help drivers with special needs students.

Premier Doug Ford, Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Transport Minister Caroline Mulroney have been sent a letter with these requests.

Our newsroom has reached out to local school bus companies for how their drivers feel about September.
