Councillor Joins 38th Service Battalion

You might want to salute Shelby Ch’ng the next time you see her.

The Thunder Bay city councillor has been appointed as honorary lieutenant-colonel with the 38th Service Battalion in the city after they approached about the position.

“Historically it’s been held by…older men who usually have some sort of business connection or are wealthy, but they kind of wanted somebody different this time,” notes Ch’ng. “They were looking for a younger female…and I was one of the people on their list.”

She will participate in training sessions and promote the units in Northern Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Ch’ng is no stranger to the military since she was an army cadet from the ages of 13 to 19.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
