Political junkies make sure you have the popcorn on hand for Monday night’s heavy agenda at city council.
The revised designated truck route by-law will be voted on, meaning if council approves it, truck traffic will be directed to only use Highway 11/17, away from Dawson Road and Arthur Street.
Also, there’ll be a review of a report by Grant Thornton of what city services and assets to keep or sell off, as Thunder Bay tries to save money amid COVID-19.
Councillor Brian Hamilton tells us the report makes it is absolutely clear Thunder Bay needs to vastly enhance how it controls spending.
He says, “I know government isn’t a business, but I believe we have an unsustainable level of subsidization for virtually every service we provide. Those subsidies come at a great cost, our municipal infrastructure.”
The McKellar Ward rep compares Thunder Bay to Kingston, saying this city has a parks budget of $8.9-million, while Kingston’s is $3.9-million for a much larger population.
Some assets under consideration to sell are Port Arthur Stadium and the Conservatory.
