Despite the border closure, there are reports of vehicles bearing US plates being spotted around northern Ontario including Thunder Bay and Fort Frances.
The mayor of the border town, June Caul, raised the issue with MPP Greg Rickford, MP Marcus Powlowski and OPP recently.
They tell her some may be Canadian citizens returning home and own a vehicle purchased and licensed in the US.
Thunder Bay’s Tourism Manager Paul Pepe adds many of those vehicles may belong to people with dual citizenship, as well as others who cross the border for work purposes. And, he says some vehicles may belong to people who have been working in the area, such as at mines.
Anyone who crosses the border is asked to self-isolate for 14 days.
Authorities also maintain a list of all who enter and have the ability to check on their whereabouts in the area if necessary.
