More COVID Cases Shuts Down Mine Site

There are five more positive COVID-19 cases connected to the locked down Lac des Iles mine north of Thunder Bay.

The information comes from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit who has been doing extra testing both on and off the mine site following the discovery of the first positive case last week. Two of these individuals are on site in self isolation and have been receiving medical care with the other three at home in self isolation. There were thirteen individuals who tested negative with other results pending and more testing was done on Sunday

The health unit says all individuals with symptoms are in self isolation adding “Significant measure were put in place to reduce the likelihood of further spread of the virus at the mine site.”

Health authorities indicate they are working with the mine’s owner Impala Canada about removing the majority workers from the site which is scheduled to begin Monday and they will self quarantine with the company saying the mine is shutting down.

Those workers who were on the mine site on or after March 30th are being asked to isolate for 14 days.
