Port Welcomes First Ocean Bound Ship

Thunder Bay has welcomed its first ocean-going ship, officially kicking off the international shipping season for the port.

The M.V. Tufty was the first “salty” to arrive at Richardson’s elevator on Friday, and will load up grain for Italy.

The Thunder Bay Port Authority says demand for certain products has increased globally, as customers in different parts of the world stockpile goods in the face of lockdown over COVID-19.

Port officials skipped the annual Top Hat ceremony as a precaution to avoid spreading the virus. The hat is traditionally given to the Captain of the first ocean-bound ship of the season.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
