Social Distancing Enforcement Not Possible: Mayor

A passionate plea from Thunder Bay’s mayor for everyone in Thunder Bay to take the threat of COVID-19 seriously.

During a council meeting last night, Bill Mauro pointed out relying on enforcement to get people to social distance means we are in trouble, as there are not enough police or public health officials.

“We won’t accomplish this through enforcement, we will accomplish this through individual responsibility. I’m asking the community, individually, collectively, as families, as neighbourhoods, please play your part,” said the Mayor.

City manager Norm Gale repeated officials at city hall are constantly in conversation to adjust to the on-going crisis. The mayor added hospitals across North America are doing their best to be ready for what could come.

“Councillor Ruberto mentioned that he talked to an E.R. doctor today, and the doctor mentioned that within 10 days things can change, within 10 hours, within 10 minutes, things can be very different,” added Mauro.

He also noted what he has seen in the community, and commented on the importance for those returning from travel to keep distance from other people.

“We need you all to understand the seriousness of the situation that we are in. We can all be potential carriers, we can be a-symptomatic and still be in the community acting as if we are not a threat,” noted the mayor.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
