Jails Ban Visits Over COVID-19 Worries

Provincial and federal jails are the latest institutions trying to limit any spread of COVID-19.

Personal visits have been suspended at provincial and federal prisons, effective immediately.

Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General says people who serve their sentences on the weekends can get permission to return home for now, to reduce the risk of transmitting COVID-19.

Federally, the Correctional Service of Canada says health officials in its institutions are prepared to deal with COVID-19 and have an emergency plan in case of an outbreak. Officials add there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in federal jails.
