The student-led climate advocacy group Fossil Free Lakehead is asking the school’s Board of Governors to start divesting its fossil fuel holdings from its endowment.
Student Erin Knight says it’s time for the school to consider reinvestment because of climate change concerns.
“In light of the climate crisis, we think it’s important for Lakehead acting as a student representative, to listen to what students are asking for,” Knight says.
Fossil Free Lakehead feels removing financial support from the fossil fuel industry not only changes the conversation around energy demands but also keeps oil reserves in the ground.
“There’s a big outcry right now to pay attention to climate change and take it seriously, and we’ve seen other universities divest their funds in fossil fuels,” Knight adds.
