Mayor Sensationalizing Issues: Councillor

It appears to be a battle of ‘he said, he said’ at City Council between City Councillor Trevor Giertuga and Mayor Bill Mauro.

Giertuga feels the mayor’s response to his accusations of breaching a Code of Conduct are inaccurate.

Giertuga points out if holding someone to account for actions made at council is weaponizing the commissioner, then the Mayor should familiarize himself with council procedures and stop sensationalizing issues that don’t go the way he likes.

Bill Mauro suggested to Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro Giertuga is simply using the commissioner as a weapon against anyone who votes against the truck route plan.

The Mayor says Giertuga seemed to allege Councillor Brian Hamilton was in Conflict of Interest when he voted for the truck route, but not when Hamilton switched his vote. Giertuga says he spoke to Hamilton about the Conflict of Interest before knowing how the McKellar councillor would vote.

The at-large-councillor still plans to call on the Integrity Commissioner to investigate comments Mauro made at Monday’s council meeting about the Designated Truck Route.

Giertuga further says the DTR was passed by a majority of councillors, and he was therefore questioning if comments by the Mayor contravene the Code of Conduct, undermining a ratified decision of council. He says there is a mechanism to overturn the DTR decision, but that would require 9 votes and Bill Mauro is aware of this.
