City Could Declare Climate Emergency

As more natural disasters and weather-related catastrophes strike the world and Thunder Bay, the City is going to consider declaring a climate emergency. The recommendation is coming to Council tonight from the city’s EarthCare committee.

Aynsley Klassen is the Chair of EarthCare’s Climate Adaptation Working Group and tells us residents will be gathering at City Hall over the noon hour to write words and phrases on a whiteboard detailing what climate change looks like. They’ll be creating two tableaux, still image “snapshots” depicting the impacts of a ‘business as usual’ scenario, and an ambitious climate-responsive scenario.

If it’s approved it would be a symbolic gesture, and Thunder Bay would join other Ontarian and Canadian cities who have adopted similar policies.
