Ontario Opens Up Cannabis Retail Licences

The provincial government is removing the cap it has on the number of cannabis stores in the province.

D.J. Connor of Kia Ora tells us they are happy to hear about the change and notes it’s now just a waiting game to get a licence. “You could be waiting a few months, you could be waiting for six months, you could be waiting a year but at least now it allows us to put that licence in our hands, so we can actually operate a store, and actually have something for Thunder Bay.”

Meanwhile, Terry Plante, Owner of the Marijuana Palace says “it’s a great idea to open the process up to allow more retail stores in the province, but with many people applying it could be years before a store could open due to the high volume of people applying.”

Marijuana Palace is going to consult their attorney to see what their options are, and how long it will take to get a shop opened.

Plante adds even though you get a licence you are still bound by the government’s rules to keep your licence in compliance. He notes “big brother will always be looking over your shoulder.”

The earliest local stores can apply is January 6th. The province is hoping to have twenty stores a month open starting in March.
