Johnson Supports Fire Study

Rebecca Johnson understands but disagrees with Firefighters’ Association’s opposition to a plan that suggests cutting some of their services.

The 10-year Master Plan for fire services is coming to Council tonight.

The City Councillor says while the Master Plan needs adjustments, it may be necessary to close some fire halls.

“It’s not nice, but that’s the reality of the current situation that we’re looking at. We have to make sure that ‘we’re providing the best service that we can, and how that goes into the future as well.”

Johnson says firefighters may be comfortable with the current setup, but changes and savings are needed. “People are changing where they live, businesses are changing, et cetera,” Johnson points out, adding they may also have to look at the number of medical calls that firefighters respond to.

The Councillor says they will hear the plan tonight and expects to approve an adjusted version in February. She notes the plan will be open for public comment, including from organizations like the Firefighter’s’ Association.
