Councillor Fired Up Over Dumping

The excessive indiscriminate dumping of garbage in some parts of the city has McKellar’s ward councillor angry.

Brian Hamilton tells us he’s been in touch with city by-law officials and solid waste department to find ways to address these hot spots, such as alleyways. “I don’t think garbage is specific to any jurisdiction in Thunder Bay. But definitely in my ward we’ve had issues of people dumping in back lanes. Apparently it’s been on-going for years.” The city councillor adds he has spent time with community volunteers cleaning garbage such as furniture to kids toys.

And, he tells us one thing he’s not about to do is spend more money on increased by-law enforcement. “Could be a relocation of resources. It could be maybe community partnerships, community engagements. So that’s what I’ve been working on.”

The McKellar Ward councillor adds people have been calling him about problem areas, and he encourages that to continue.

And now that he has a seat on city council, Hamilton says he’s more aware of certain issues such as people dumping garbage. “The main that we want to do is start addressing it, but in a way that doesn’t just clean it up, but hopefully brings some awareness. And hopefully find and fine, and charge some of these people.”
