This one’s all about the carats and carrots! Newfoundlander John Neville may win the prize for the most unique proposal! He and his love, Danielle “DeeJay” Squires have been together for around six years and have a couple of kids. They knew they’d get married one day, but things are busy with a couple of kids, and they were in no rush. John secretly bought a ring when they were expecting their son four years ago but he, as he says, is a procastinator and was waiting to find the right time to pop the question.
Inspired by a news story of a woman who lost her ring while gardening only to find it on a carrot, John figured out how he wanted to pop the question. Being a stay-at-home-dad, who keeps several farm animals and grows plenty of veggies, he figured he had a shot of making it work. He put the ring in a five-gallon bucket filled with soil. He pushed the ring down into the centre, then made a narrow hole in the soil through the ring with a pencil. Then he sprinkled a few seeds on top.
After a few months, he pulled the bucket out and asked DeeJay and their son to help harvest the carrots. He asked DeeJay to pull out the one in the middle. He had no clue if it had worked. She pulled out the carrot and John dropped down on one knee and said “I love you. Will you marry me?” DeeJay was confused but then looked at the carrot and … it worked! The carrot grew inside the ring! Their 3-year-old son then took a bite of the carrot! Oh, I guess this part is important as well. She said yes!
