A group of bird watchers are happy with their latest bird box program at the McKellar Island Bird Observatory.
They installed 44 boxes and 39 were used by birds according to Director John Woodcock.
“39 boxes were used by birds, for an occupancy rate of 88.6%. Tree Swallows used 37 of the boxes and Eastern Bluebirds used two. Five boxes were unused for unknown reasons.”
Woodcock adds none of the boxes had signs of predation and that’s because “we put slinkies on the bases to protect them from squirrels and other predators.”
All of the boxes that were used contained nests that were soiled, indicating that broods of young birds were successfully raised.
The McKellar Island Bird Observatory placed the boxes along the McKellar River on Baffin Street.
