Feds Fund Salvation Army’s New Building

The Salvation Army’s new Journey to Life Centre just received a substantial shot in the arm from the federal government.

Employment Minister Patty Hajdu announced $3 million towards the project saying it helps provide transitional housing for our community.

“People are looking for dignity in their life. There is an opportunity with housing like this for people to develop life skills and confidence and for them to do that in an environment that indicates to them that they also have worth.”

The new shelter will provide 46 supportive beds and what officials call 20 new transitional units.

Major Lori Mitchell tells us when she heard they would be getting the money she did a happy dance.

“The application process was quite onerous and extensive the information that they needed. There were days where I was quite frustrated and I made some calls to the Minister’s office saying I need some support.”

Mitchell adds us they’ve raised 55% of their $2.5 million objective and notes they still need to raise the remaining $1.2 million.

The new three-story 30,000 square foot building is expected to be completed by August 2020.
