Area golfers will be celebrating the Chapples courses’ 70th anniversary in a couple of weeks.
Chapples is an 18-hole, 6207 yard, Par 71 course located in the Chapples Park. The course opened in 1949 and organizers of a special ceremony recently asked local golfers for their pictures of the course over the years.
Thunder Bay Supervisor of Golf Operations Pat Berezowski tells us they are going to start displaying the history of the golf course for all to see.
“Mr. Clement E. Chapple had ideas for the area back then it was known as the Neebing Recreational area, lands that were put aside for recreation in the centre of the city. Just bringing that to light, featuring in the clubhouse for junior golfers and visitors to see. So everyone can experience the history and learn where Chapples came from.”
Berezowski tells us he heard from old-timers they used to pay 25 cents for a round of golf at Chapples.
The club opened in 1949, and a special ceremony celebrating it will take place later this month.
